The joy of words

Cover

I love puns and playing with words. And while a good witticism is truly an enormous amount of fun, my favourite is finding a pun in an ordinary word, whether in the form of a homophone or simply as-is.

Please, enjoy some of my favourite puns.

Shakespeare cartoonified – The Merchant of Venice: part 4

I’M BACK! And so is ol’ Wills! Though this return may be a bit brief for the moment, I’m doing my best to get this blog back on its little feet. But I’ll explain more below. For now, let’s get back to the cartoon. As I’m sure you’ve forgotten everything that’s already happened in this series (I know I have), here are the other parts: part 1part 2 and part 3. And now for the fourth part!

Shakespeare cartoonified – The Merchant of Venice: part 2

Hey everyone!

So, after a longer-than-expected silence, here is part two of The Merchant of Venice in cartoon form.

If you’ve completely forgotten what happened in part one (I know I have), you can go recap right now.

Shakespeare cartoonified – The Merchant of Venice: Part 1

I know many people hate Shakespeare and that they have had bad experiences with it in school. But, you know, Shakespeare really isn’t all that bad. I’m very fond of Shakespearian plays myself, and as I have to write a paper on Shakespearian comedy at the moment, I thought I’d turn work into play and cartoonify The Merchant of Venice. (The cartoon isn’t part of the paper. That would have been a wonderful opportunity though! I’m studying the devices used in the play.)

So here is my retelling of Merchant. I hope you like it and that I can share my enjoyment of the comedy with you in this series of cartoons. (Also, I did not mean for Lorenzo to come out having Draco Malfoy hair. That kind of just happened.)

Things that you can do that are more interesting than fixing my internet

Hi! I’m back (again) and I really hope that my three weeks of internet and computer frustration are now finally over. But more on that below. As we had all of this trouble getting our internet connection fixed, I needed some way to vent my frustration at this process. So what better way than a cartoon? I hope you enjoy (and that my actual point isn’t too vague).

How to hit yourself through the face with your own hair

Dear me, things have been way too serious around here of late. Just look at all the serious topics we’ve dealt with: from job interviews to the future of little children to Hobbit movies… Something needs to be done. We need something a little more light-hearted, what do you say?

Your brain on writing

Well, hello. Merry Chris─ No wait, that’s not yet. I’m still muddled over the days. In November I’m always acutely aware what the date is and how many days there are left to the end of the month, but in December… well, let’s just say you’re lucky if I know what day of the week it is, nevermind what the actual date is.

However! I may have an explanation why I’m so muddle-headed. A word of warning: I drew this last night while watching Terry Pratchett’s Going Postal in one corner of the screen and drawing in what was left over of the space. If it sounds weird, blame the movie.

Sleeping

Please take a moment to appreciate the conformity of my last two titles. 😉 It was going to be “Sleeping positions”, but I decided I should stop misleading people with sexual innuendos, because you won’t find any of that kind of sleeping in this cartoon.

Let us then pretend that it is not really late and that it is still Tuesday. It is still Tuesday in my head anyway. So, put it down to holiday brain and more on.

A NaNoWriMo scenario [cartoon]

Hi! If I’m writing this, it means I survived my first exam today! And guess what that means? I should be studying for my next one on Friday, but I have a minute now and this means cartoons! And what else would it be about than what is constantly on my mind at the moment: National Novel Writing Month? So, here’s my version of Nanotoons!

Yes, this really happens. 😛

Here’s a tip: don’t ever name a character Vivienne if you’re going to be typing her name in a hurry. It’s the hardest name ever to type. It’s like, left hand, right hand, left hand, right hand, left hand, double right hand, left hand. Bam. But now I’ve made that mistake and I’ve got to live with it. 😉

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go write. I have 20,371 words so far and I need to hit 21,667 in one hour from now. I really don’t want to go. I’m aching all over and the last thing I want to do right now is exert myself further. It isn’t just that my arm aches from writing the exam (Though it would have been cool if the roughly 3,000 words [I’m deadly serious] I wrote in the exam today counted for NaNo. It’d give me such a boost! :P), I also thought it would be a great idea to do a workout this morning because I hadn’t slept nearly enough last night and I thought it would wake my brain up. I haven’t done a proper workout since high school, under the death stare of the PE teacher… Well, it did wake my brain up. Unfortunately it also woke my muscles up. I didn’t even know you had muscles along the sides of your ribcage. Well, that’s where it mainly aches right now. You guys can tell I dropped biology as fast as I possibly could in high school and did history instead, can’t you? I’m clueless about anatomy. 😉

I’ve put in almost 14 hours of writing so far. For the first time, I’m keeping a log book of my NaNo and it’s very interesting. I’ve also been able to monitor that my morale hasn’t been very good so far this month:

I was so sick on the 6th, with a headache that I could hardly see, let alone type. I managed 779 words though. 🙂 I need to fill in today’s. It’s probably about a five.

Okay. Ouch. Now I’m really going. Because…

I’ve leave you with the wise words of the wonderful Nanny Ogg:

“You ain’t going to lose, are you?”

— Terry Pratchett

Panic

Hi everyone! Guess what I want to shout right now?

This was a really lame cartoon, I’m sorry. I wanted to add more panels and reactions and things, but then my internet just died last night when I was composing this post. I think it must have hit the bandwidth limit. Oopsie. That’s embarrassing. Too many vlogbrothers videos, maybe? That’s another thing I do when procrastinating, and it’s kind of addicting. This is why this post is even later than usual. I’m in the university library right now, using stupid, slow Internet Explorer to write this. Ugh.

I had to get it published before NaNoWriMo starts, because I also have to add that I don’t know how regular updates will be between exams and novel-writing and everything else I complained about above. I’ll try to update on my writing and I have a few cartoons that I can upload, so we’ll just have to see how far I get. Anyway, if you want to laugh at my failure to write, the NaNo widgets have made a reappearance in my sidebar –> right underneath the follow icons. It’ll update with my word count, if you’re interested. Now I can just hope my internet makes a reappearance tomorrow.

Speaking of NaNoWriMo, I made myself a word count calendar this year and I’m uploading it to the internet if anyone else wants to use it. Feel free to download it, save it as your wallpaper, print it or share it with your friends! Just don’t remove my watermark, or distribute it as your own.

Details:
Featuring: a Lord of the Rings themed NaNoWriMo calendar. (I took the opportunity to compare NaNo to an epic journey, Frodo’s to be specific.)
Size: 1920 x 1080 (HD)

Enjoy!

Now, for the random stuff (yes, this post is long, consider it making up for future lack of posting): when I started this cartoon, I  thought of this book cover:

Don’t panic! That’s advice I could do with remembering! That’s The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, for those who can’t tell.

And then… as I took this picture, I though “How many things are there sticking out about my head?! Seriously…” So then I made this (I was bored):

Okay, that is probably quite enough. I’m going to look for a novel plot now. Find me on Tumblr for more NaNo related stuff, or check the sidebar widget and good luck to everyone else participating!

Happy Hallowe’en! :[

Public speaking

Hi! Sorry this post is late…

Oh, and welcome, to my 100th post on this blog! 😀

In other news, my oral exam went really, really well and I did great. I got about the highest marks that I have ever got for talking! Of course I had been worrying myself to death over nothing…
I was just really glad that I could sit down for the exam, because I had given myself such a stomach ache from stress (like I always do) that I wouldn’t have wanted to stand up. 😛

Also, I really don’t even have an excuse for the late post. But I’ll try: I was procrastinating 60% this weekend, I forgot that I hadn’t a finished drawing yet for 40% and I fell asleep when I tried to do something about this last night for 20%. Oh no, wait. That 120%. Let’s try again: I procrastinated 50%, forgot 40% and fell asleep (or just decided to go to bed) 10%. That sounds sufficient. 😉 A nice, statistical way of saying nothing at all…

At the moment, I’m lying flat on my back on my bed with the laptop on my stomach, nursing a headache. It aches from my nose, through my eye, in a line across my head and down my neck at the back. Urghhhh… Also, I have a huge analytical essay to hand in on Friday and I haven’t written a single word yet. And not a single word will get written tonight either, if I know myself. I’m just going to go to sleep again. Well, maybe I can make an attempt to read my research material in bed, to make myself feel less guilty about not working.

[Harry] did not usually lie in bed reading his textbooks; that sort of behaviour, as Ron rightly said, was indecent in anybody except Hermione, who was simply weird that way.

I’m going to try to publish a book review next week, so see you then!

A Day in My Energy Levels

Hi everyone! I hope everyone had/is having/will have a great Monday!

And here’s a new cartoon! Instead of “A day in the life of…”, it is:

This is my real Thursday timetable. On Tuesdays my classes are a bit later and closer together, Wednesdays are unpredictable and usually consist of a lot of running around and on Fridays my classes are later, which is good because I actually have time to wake up, but it is also bad, because they are neverendingly long on a Friday afternoon. 😉 Oh, and on Mondays I don’t have class. Now you know why I post on Mondays. The secret? It isn’t actually to brighten up your week. (Well, maybe just a bit of that. :P) It’s because I’m at home. 🙂

In other news, I think I have finally found a font to use in my drawings! It’s the one I used in this cartoon. I’ve been using all kinds of fonts lately to try and find one that I can be consistent with. It needed to be a font that went well with everything, that I can use in all caps if I want and above all, one  that has a decent * symbol. Yes, I’m so happy to have found the one at last! An added bonus is that this font looks a lot like my natural handwriting. Except that it is x100 times neater than my handwriting. Anything is neater than that! 😉

I hope you all have a great week! 😀

I’ll never make a good burglar

Wow, is it really that late? I might as well add “story of my life to this”, because feeling like this is pretty normal for me. I’d been watching videos on YouTube and never noticed where the time went. So, I hope it is still Monday! And here’s a new cartoon! (I’m relegating all the “so, what happened last week-stuff to the bottom of the post, so we can get to the important stuff first.)

The moral of the story, kids? Just cough when you need to; it’s less disturbing than trying to be polite.

So… what happened in the last two weeks when I didn’t post? What happened was assignments. I had assignments to hand in on the 19th, the 20th, the 21st and the 28th. All of them essays. I hate it when it happens like this and it happens Every Single Year just before the recess because everyone wants to fit their stuff before the holiday. Anyway, it is now recess this week and I am slightly less tired than last week. I thought I’d try to draw some posts ahead of time to prevent these silences because things are going to be rough from now until final exams, but I think all of us know that is not going to happen because I have a stack of books to read in this week. And I do mean a stack. I am reading A Portrait of a Lady at the moment. (Which, very fittingly is on the frequently challenged-books list for Banned Books Week this week. I only found that out tonight. I’m not sure what about this book could make anyone want to ban it – so far it’s only been a lot of dry conversation – but then I’m only on page 100 [yay, that’s almost 1/6 done!] so I can’t speak.) And I have several more to read when that one is done. In between, Tumblr, blogs and making graphics distract my attention.

[By the way, I changed my Tumblr url. I am no longer cartoonsandcreativewriting|tumblr, but I am now hobbitofunseenhogwarts|tumblr. I am just trying to spread this news as wide as possible, because I feel bad about abandoning the old url just like that.]

Okay then, I’ll see y’all again next week! Or maybe sooner, if I can get a vlog made. I want to make a video again and I can only do so if I get the house to myself. For some or other stupid reason I can’t make these things if I think someone can hear me, which is kind of  really stupid, seeing that I then put it on the internet for all to hear. Anyway… If I don’t make a video, until next Monday then!

I will now undertake a nocturnal excursion through the house and hope it doesn’t lead to another disaster…
